IP Ratings Explained

What are IP Ratings?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings explain how well a product enclosure protects its contents from dust and water. The rating is expressed as a two-digit code (XY) that shows the level of protection against solid objects and liquids. X indicates protection against solid particles and Y indicates protection against liquids such as water. Using this code, it is easy to determine whether a product is suitable for dry, dusty, or wet industrial environments.

Most TPL Vision products feature protective enclosures for their electrical components. These enclosures are tested according to the IEC 60529 standard, ensuring reliable protection in a wide range of industrial conditions.

Choosing the Right IP Rating for Your Application

When selecting a machine vision light, it is important to consider a solution with an IP rating that matches your environment. IP ratings indicate protection against dust and water, but different conditions require different levels of protection. For example:

Dusty Environments – Industrial settings can be filled with dust or tiny particles. Here an IP65 rated light would be sufficient as it provides dust protection while still delivering reliable operation of the electrical components.

Wet or Splash-prone Areas – IP65 is also suitable for this environment if the product is exposed to occasional water spray. For more direct water jets at higher pressure, a higher liquid protection (e.g. IP67) may be required.

Harsh Washdown Environments – IP69K lights are designed for high-pressure, high-temperature washdowns (e.g. in pharmaceutical or food production where equipment is frequently cleaned with high-pressure water jets and steam).

Environments with Oil or Chemicals – IP ratings do not cover oil/lubricants/chemical exposure, so extra care is needed. TPL Vision products should only be exposed to liquids covered under the IP testing standard (water) unless otherwise stated in the datasheet.

Outdoor Use – IP ratings alone do not guarantee suitability for outdoor conditions, including rain, UV exposure, or extreme temperatures. Only products explicitly rated for outdoor use should be deployed in these environments.

IP Ratings for TPL Vision Products

All new products from TPL Vision are rated to IP65 as standard (unless otherwise stated) – providing dust tight protection and low-pressure water jet protection. Some older products do have a lower rating, so it is important to consider this when choosing your illumination product. Importantly, ingress protection does not mean the product can be exposed to oil and lubricants as the properties are different from water. Oil, lubricants and other non-water liquid substances are not covered under warranty unless otherwise stated in the product datasheet. Please note: TPL Vision products are not intended for outdoor use, unless specifically stated on the product datasheet.
